East Texas Burn Injury Attorney Serving the Greater Houston Area

By all accounts, burn injuries are among the most painful. When severe, they may also be among the most difficult to treat. When you suffer a burn injury for which someone else is liable, it is very important to have the support of a fine personal injury attorney. At Chandler, Mathis & Zivley we are prepared to fight aggressively for your rights so that you get all the restitution you deserve.

How Burn Injuries Occur

There are a number of situations in which another person, company or institution is responsible for a patient's burns. Burns in which there is liability involved may include:

  • Vehicular crashes
  • Burns on the job, at the workplace or off-site
  • Explosions
  • Electrical accidents
  • Radiation during X-ray or therapy
  • Chemical contact with acids or other substances
  • Contact with hot metal or glass
  • Contact with hot liquid or steam
  • Arson

Cases in which a person or business can be successfully sued for the burn injuries of another may involve reckless driving or DUI, large gas explosions and gas well site explosions, medical malpractice, direct assault, arson, defective electrical equipment, or improper protection of employees, children or the public from hot surfaces, liquids or steam.

Types of Burn Injuries and Their Symptoms

There are three categories of burn injuries: first-degree, in which only the outer layer of skin is damaged, second-degree in which the top two skin layers are injured, and third-degree, in which not only the deepest layer of skin is damaged, but also the tissue beneath it.

Patients who suffer burns may experience swelling, blistering, scarring, dehydration, and, in the most severe cases, shock or death. They may also suffer smoke inhalation, a frequent cause of burn deaths. Burn victims are susceptible to infection because they have lost some or all of their skin's protective covering and, therefore, are often treated with antibiotics as well as intravenous fluids. In cases of severe burn injuries, patients have to have their lost skin replaced with natural or artificial grafts.
